The Draft
There has been alot of discussion lately about a possible return of the draft. Usually this is accompianied by seeming terrified or angry comments. I’ve stated before that I really hate it when people use fear to try and force an opinion, and this issue is no different.
We have a major problem in Iraq. One that we caused by mishandling the situation. I have seen people talk in support for troops and I’ve seen people talk in support of just pulling out and letting them kill each other in civil war. I personally consider the latter idea criminal negligence as we caused the situation in the first place. To which my counter parts like to say that they’ve always been at war with each other. It doesn’t matter. We stepped in and removed Saddam, therefore we are responsible for what we see now. It is the height of irony to me that the Islamic factions of Iraq are now using the freedom we gave them to kill and protest our being there. Something they had no power to do before. Instead of taking care of their own, they are busy fighting us. I wonder how long it’s going to take them to realize that if they stopped killing our solders and work on their own government, we’d leave.
In either case, it is clear we can’t leave just yet, and that we’re in for a long, draining haul. For good or for ill, there we are. So in order to deal with the requirements we now have talk of a draft. While I have yet to make up my mind about it personally, I really don’t want my son or daughter going to war for any reason. What mother does?
But the talk of a draft I think confuses some big issues. One that this columnist I’ve linked to makes some good points on.
