Fear Mongering and Yahoo Religion 2

To say I’m disappointed in who is still president is putting it mildly. However, what’s done is done and you move on dealing with what’s around you. What I’m thrilled about is that our schools are still funded. YAY!!!!

However, my chatroom has gone nuts these last few days and today has been the worst. We have the republicans gloating as if rapture as happened and they are all in heaven and we’re in hell. And then there are my more outrageous friends, some democrats, some independant, some various other party affiliations who are all moaning as if Nazi Germany has set up head quarters in Washington. Which , when you look at what has been tried in the Supreme Court could make you wonder.

However, the room itself is a pain to be in at the moment. We either have gloating fundy christians who are yelling for joy that Bush is president and happily condemning everyone to hell who doesn’t believe in God AND Bush, or we have the flip side of the fundy political/religious score card who are all moaning that the destruction of civilization is coming and we’re all getting what we deserve because Bush has been voted in. There is so much fear mongering it’s not even funny.

I stopped watching TV news when it occured to me that the number one priority of news stations is to sell commercial time for as much money as they can. Only way to do that is to get a large market share of viewers. And how to do you get more viewers? Make them think that if they don’t watch your stations some vital piece of news that may just save their life might be missed. It’s pathetic. I’ve gotton sick of being told that the latest fluff is the most important thing I need to watch at this moment. Heaven forbid I get real news that actually has a point and really means something.

I rejected most versions of the Christian faiths I studied because I could see how the loving gospel of Christ had been warped into this fear based “heaven or hell” mentality that emphasized mouthing some words over following Christs example and actually living Christ’s doctrine of loving service to our brothers and sisters. Again, some of these groups used Fear of hell to get people to do what they wanted.

What’s really interesting is how much the Lord commands that we should not be afraid. We should not be indulging in fear mongering. The warnings of the bible aren’t meant to be holier then thou threats, but warnings to get prepared and not be afraid so that we can not be manipulated and controlled.

And that’s what fear is really about…Control. When you stand afraid of something, you open yourself up to being controlled and manipulated. And it doesn’t matter the vehicle that is used. It’s still greed and selfishness that has manipulated you into doing what they wanted because they used your fear to make you stop thinking and just react with a knee jerk.

How many times did we hear in this campaign from Bush and his supporters that if you voted for anyone else the terrorists were going to get you. The terrorists are already getting us. We will have more attacks. It’s gonna happen, and I’m not living in a shoebox with no rights “just in case”. It’s no different then when various christians tell me I’m going to hell for believing in the wrong view of Jesus and so I should switch “just in case”. I thought it was very very telling that New York voted for Kerry. Clearly, they didn’t see Bush as “saving them from more attacks”. How many times did we hear marriage was in danger if homosexuals got to marry? Marriage wasn’t in danger….only those who value marriage get married. How many straight people do you know who have no interest in getting married? Many I bet. Voting in discrimination isn’t going to suddenly make all the straight people living with their boyfriends and girlfriends suddenly realize they need to be married. And don’t even start with the OT verses. I can point to just as many verses where God tells the straight folks to only have sex in marriage or they can be killed. How many of you who use this argument are sleeping with your boyfriends and girlfriends? How many of you have cheated?

I’m not going to live with my head in the sand and pray it passes me by. I know how bad things are, and the only real affect I can have is by working with my kids and the places that I have immediate contact with. I can prepare myself for how bad I think things are going to get, but I refuse to sit in terror over “might” and let the assholes on both sides around me control how I live by telling me to be afraid of the dark like I’m a five year old.

I’ll be glad when this passes and my friends calm down enough to stop being hysterical.

I wish there weren’t gloating and fear. I wish we all could get along.

And I’m with you about being happy the schools are funded.

Thank you for making me “check myself”. I needed to rethink my feelings about this whole fear thing, and for me to be afraid of gwb being in power is much more benificial to him than it is me. I hope more ppl read this and stop “living with our heads in the sand.”
