Science Fair Surprises

My son had a science fair last night. Him and his partner were studying the popular subject of the effects on various drinks on our teeth. He used five of his baby teeth that I had saved. Yes, I keep my kids babyteeth as keepsakes, or try to.

Anyway, their results were interesting in that the coffee, Ice tea, diet cola, sprite and water did affect the teeth in various ways. Even though they did their experiment over a month ago, the teeth, having been affected and decay encouraged, have continued to show long term effects on the teeth. For example, during the fair, the tooth that had sat in coffee for a week split into two pieces. When I was able to show up after dropping the daughter off at other activities, there was a cluster of kids all ooh’ing and ahh’ing over this split tooth.

As to the results of this science fair, I will let a portion of my son’s email to his dad tell the rest of the story…

Yeah, it was great. To start, a lot of people looked at and commented on our project.

Secondly, we were one of the groups chosen to go to the District Science Fair on May 5.

And lastly, we got the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD!

What happened was people were to go around and vote for their favorite projects from each section. We were one of the groups awarded.

The funny thing is that both of these awards came rather suddenly. My teacher just came up to me in the middle of it, put his hands on my shoulders, said “You’re going to district,” and walked away. The People’s Choice Award…we were the first ones awarded!

Oh, yes. It was fabulous.

The Spud was on cloud nine after his teacher came up to him and shocked us with his announcement that he was going to district. And he definately wasn’t expecting the additional award which came with a silly toy from Starbucks and baseball tickets to a local game. It was great to watch him, he kept breaking into these little jigs and dancing around. I was so proud of him.
