Lost City
This morning BG sent me an email telling me about a symposium going on at his college. One of the speakers there is Debbie Kelley who, it turns out has been studying a new type of underwater thermal field.
Found in 2000 in the mid-atlantic this underwater thermal field is unlike any thermal field discovered so far. We’ve all seen articles on underwater volcanos that host shrimp, worms and such that live off of sulfar and water temperatures that measure around 120 degrees or hotter. But this new set of thermal vents aren’t the result of volcanos. They plume much like the other vents, only they are expelling different chemicals and at much hotter temperatures. The life forms they are finding are unlike any other ever discovered. Which isn’t surprising considering that only about 10% of our ocean has been mapped and studied. As one scientist said in one of the many articles I’ve read this morning, “We know more about the surface of Mars then we do about our own oceans.”
Here are a few links to help you discover this new world under our ordinary looking oceans.
