temple tuesday

Every Tuesday, I’m lucky enough to be able to go to our LDS temple that is near our home. It’s peaceful and lovely and a great place to meditate and feel closer to my Heavenly Father. But that is only one of the reasons Mormons go to the temple. Our temples are places where we work. It’s not work we get paid for in money, but in peace and blessings.

One of the aspects of our faith, is that we are eternal children of parents who are deity. And the purpose of this life is to learn from the sorrow of this world and return home. In order to return home, certain ordinances must be done here on earth. In the bible it repeats that in order to enter the “kingdom of God” , our former home, one must be baptized by water and by fire, or spirit, it means the same thing. This is something that must happen for everyone, and for those who lived this life without knowing this, they are given the chance in the spirit world to learn this. We do the work that requires the physical body, which means we stand as a proxy, or substitute body, and take on that person’s name. Then that person who is dead has to make the choice of either accepting that work, or rejecting it, just as we do here.

I’ve had people shake their heads and say you’re nuts, or look at me and gape at the amount of work that means we must do. It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure, but this service to our brothers and sisters who have lived before us is at the heart of what we believe. For those who thinks it’s about inflating our numbers to have more “mormons” is nonsense. It about making sure our brothers and sisters can return home if they want to. And don’t even bring up the “believe or burn” garbage it’s not even an issue for us, besides this post is long enough already. LOL

Thank you for explaining the reasons for proxy baptism so well…I’ve met a few Mormons & ex-Mormons who talked a bit about it, but it just sounded kind of nuts. Now I can see the reasoning behind it, and I think it’s a lovely idea (since the person has the choice of accepting it or not, it really is an offered gift), even if it doesn’t mesh with my beliefs.
