Class update

Ok, I have class three days a week. And since this is the first week of class, we have spent alot of time doing the GED pre-tests so that we can find out where we have to concentrate on and what we don’t. Each person is at a different level. And the tests are such that the teacher can easily see what concepts you still have to learn.

I have passed three of the five pre-tests so far. I passed the social studies and reading with a perfect score, so I won’t have any problems there. The science one would also have been perfect except that I didn’t know what a certain word meant so I got that question wrong. But still, all I have left are the writing and math. The math test I’m not even going to try yet because I know that is where I’m the most deficiant.

I have a basic fractions workbook I’m starting in, and my son took one look at it and then gave me this condescending look and told me that he already has learned this stuff. I had the impression that he wasn’t impressed with college if this is the level of math they started with. I smiled and reminded my son that I have forgotten alot and they are starting me with what I’ve forgotten. That seemed to work for him but I could tell he wasn’t impressed. I have always been amazed at the way my kids’ school teaches math. They make it so real and teach the principles so well that both of my kids, who are going into sixth and fourth grade, have a better grasp of math then I ever have.

When I was in school I just couldn’t get fractions, which has always been silly to me because I cook. But still within the world of equations, I could never figure out how to make the fractions work. I remember crying in frustration because I couldn’t seem to understand no matter how much tutoring I got. Well apparently all I needed was twelve years of maturing, because I’m getting it now with no biggie, it’s like, oh duh! All of this makes me feel better, maybe I’ll finally understand the Geometry this time around also.

Those “ah-ha” moments are what makes learning so much fun, even if it comes 12 years down the road. Go Wendi! Make it through the fractions and you’ll have the hardest part of math nailed down. It’s the fractions that plague people all the way through calc. So woo hoo for you! Go girly go!

Thanks for the vote of confindance and the comment. I was starting to wonder if I was just talking to myself. *grin*
